It’s been more than a month that dismissed Railway Police Force (RPF) constable Chetan Singh Chaudhary is admitted in the Thane Mental hospital for his abnormal behavior. The District Mental Health Review Board, Thane has asked for one more month as he is still under various investigations and tests.

Chaudhary was shifted to Thane mental hospital on February 20 after the complaint of his abnormal behavior and poor cooperation. The Board on Monday submitted a report before the sessions court hearing the firing case at Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express. In its report the Board has said, “the patient is under treatment and undergoing various investigations by concerned doctors.” The board said that he would be required to keep in the hospital for one more month for detailed investigation.

The court had on March 12 called for a medical report after it was brought to the court by the Thane prison authorities that Chaudhary had been in a mental hospital, Thane since February 20. On March 12, Chaudhary’s lawyer pleaded the court to not continue recording of the testimony of witnesses in his absence specially when Chaudhary’s mental health is found to be deteriorating.

Prior to this on January 21, the sessions court had asked the Thane Thane Mental Hospital to examine Chaudhary’s mental condition. Chaudhary at that point was lodged in Akola prison and after the said order was transferred to Thane prison. However, as his condition deteriorated, the prison authorities had shifted him to Mental hospital.

In December last year, Akola prison authorities, where Chaudhary was lodged claimed that the doctors have opined that Choudhary’s mental health is not good and it approached the court to shift him to Nasik mental hospital. However, instead of shifting him to Nasik, the court had ordered to shift him to Thane prison and ordered the Thane mental hospital to carry out proper evaluation of his mental health. However, the detailed report from Thane mental hospital is still awaited. But in the meanwhile, because of his abnormal behavior the prison officials had shifted him to Thane mental hospital.

As per the prosecution case, on July 31, 2003, Chaudhary shot three passengers and his superior on board the moving Jaipur-Mumbai Central Express near Palghar railway station. He was nabbed with his weapon later while trying to flee after passengers pulled the chain of the train which stopped near Mira Road station.

He first shot dead RPF Assistant Sub-Inspector Tika Ram Meena and another passenger in B5 coach with his automatic weapon. Later he shot dead another passenger in a pantry car and one more passenger in S6 coach next to the pantry car after 5 AM.

The family has claimed that he was disturbed as he was transferred to Mumbai division from Porbandar in April, last year, whereas he had sought for transfer either at Mathura or Agra near to his family.
