Maha Kumbh Begins: Devotees take holy dip on Paush Purnima, 45 crore pilgrims expected

Lucknow: Maha Kumbh, the world’s biggest religious fair, has begun on the banks of the holy river Ganga in Prayagraj with the ‘Shahi Snan’ on the auspicious occasion of Paush Purnima on Monday. The holy city witnessed a massive gathering of devotees flocking to the Triveni Sangam to take the holy dip during the 45-day-long fair. The Uttar Pradesh government is expecting a footfall of 45 crore people, including seers and saints from across the world.

The religious fair is spread over four thousand hectares of land and is divided into 25 sectors. According to astrologers, this Maha Kumbh is highly auspicious because of the rare celestial alignment after 144 years.

The first ‘shahi snan’ will be held on the day of Makar Sankranti, January 15. It is estimated that as many as seven crore devotees expected to take a holy dip at the Sangam. The other royal baths are scheduled for Mauni Amavasya on January 29 and Basant Panchami on February 3. The grand event will conclude on Mahashivratri, February 26.

The tent city along the sandy banks of the Ganga is bustling with religious activity, filled with devotees, saints, seers, ‘kalpavasis’.

Meanwhile, NDRF teams and water police of Uttar Pradesh Police deployed at places to ensure the safety and security of devotees.

This year, Maha Kumbh, the largest spiritual gathering in the world, has become more special because of the rare celestial alignment that occurs only once in 144 years.

Traffic Police authorities have made elaborate arrangements and implemented a detailed plan to ensure smooth vehicular movement and safety for devotees visiting the Maha Kumbh Mela

The Maha Kumbh is being celebrated after 12 years, and over 45 crore devotees are expected for the event. The Maha Kumbh will conclude on February 26.
