On 12th February, crude bomb explosions and clashes between rival party voters disrupted the polls in various parts of Bangladesh as people queued up to cast their ballots. In Gopalganj, a crude bomb exploded at a polling centre, leaving two Ansar members and a child injured.

A second explosion at another booth in the same area left three more injured, including a teenage girl and a presiding officer.

In Dhaka’s Mirpur-10, supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami got into heated clashes, forcing police to step in and bring the situation under control.

Similar tension was observed at Munshiganj Sadar. Various groups engaged in a chase and a counter-chase after a blast occurred at Makhati Gurucharan High School in Mollakandi Union. At around 10 am, another clash occurred between the groups of Md. Kamruzzaman, the BNP candidate, and Md. Mohiuddin an independent candidate.

Arrests and recovery operation

After the blast occurred at Munshiganj, a search operation was launched in the area. According to the local media reports, Bangladesh Army personnel detained five people in the area around Makhati Gurucharan High School. Army personnel said they found one firearm and some crude bombs in the house. Captain Charles, commander of the Gazaria Army Camp, confirmed the detention.

However, Munshiganj Superintendent of Police Menhazul Alam said he was aware of the incident but did not have detailed information. Officials maintained that despite the violence, polling continued, and law enforcement agencies acted quickly to prevent further trouble.

Tensions were further fueled when there were accusations of electoral irregularities. Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Khaleduz Zaman said that in certain areas, ballot papers were being sealed in different rooms without any poll agents being present. He said that such a situation is disappointing and raised doubt on fairness.

Interim leader Muhammad Yunus said, “This day will mark a new birthday for Bangladesh,” but Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman said that if the polls were held legally, his party would accept the results.
