The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Sadar Majlis-e-Ulama-e-Deccan also known as the Moon Sighting Committee has announced the first day of Ramzan 2025 in India.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is a deeply significant time for Muslims worldwide. It is a sacred period dedicated to fasting, prayer, spiritual reflection, and strengthening community ties. During this month, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs as an expression of devotion and obedience to Allah.

Ramadan holds special importance in Islam as it commemorates the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The beginning of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon. The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Sadar Majlis-e-Ulama-e-Deccan also known as the Moon Sighting Committee has announced the first day of Ramzan 2025 in India. The holy month will begin on Sunday, 2nd March in India. Since the moon was not sighted in Lucknow, the city will also observe the first fast on March 2.

Why does Ramadan fall on different dates each year?

Ramadan moves about 10 days earlier each year because it follows the Islamic lunar calendar rather than the solar-based Gregorian calendar. Each new month begins when the crescent moon is sighted. However, different Islamic communities use various methods to determine the start of Ramadan—some rely on fixed lunar calendars, others use scientific calculations, and many follow actual moon sightings. Although exact dates may differ slightly across regions, they usually align closely, according to a report by Time Magazine.

Islamic Centre of India starts ‘Ramadan Helpline’

The Islamic Centre of India has launched a ‘Ramadan Helpline’ to assist people with queries about fasting (roza), pre-dawn meals (sehri), prayers (namaz), charity (sadqa), evening meals (iftar), special night prayers (taraweeh), and other Ramadan-related practices.

Individuals can seek guidance from scholars by calling the helpline, sending a message on WhatsApp, or reaching out via email. Maulana Khalid Rasheed stated, “This helpline is set up to provide religious guidance to the general public. We receive calls and emails from across India and even from other countries. The service will be available daily from 2 PM to 4 PM throughout Ramadan.”

People can contact the helpline through the following phone numbers: 9415102947, 7007705774, 9140427677 or via email at ramzanhelpline2005@gmail.com.
