At present, the BJP has 115 councillors, AAP has 99, the Indraprastha Vikas Party has 15, and the Congress holds 8 seats.
The results of the by-elections held in 12 wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will be declared on Wednesday. The counting of votes will start early in the morning, and security around all centres has been increased. These bypolls were organised to fill seats that became empty after several councillors moved on to the Delhi Assembly or Parliament. Voting took place on November 30, with 51 candidates, including 26 women, contesting.
The polling was held in 12 wards including Mundka (General), Shalimar Bagh-B (Women), Ashok Vihar (Women), Chandani Chowk (General), Chandani Mahal (General), Dwarka-B (Women), Dichaon Kalan (Women), Naraina (General), Sangam Vihar-A (General), Dakshin Puri (Scheduled Caste) Greater Kailash (Women), and Vinod Nagar (General).
The State Election Commission (SEC) said voter turnout across the 12 wards was 38.51% by 5:30 pm on polling day. A total of 580 booths were set up. Chandni Mahal saw the highest turnout, with 55.93%. Officials said the voting process was peaceful and went smoothly.
To manage the results, the SEC has arranged 10 counting centres in different parts of the city — Kanjhawala, Pitampura, Bharat Nagar, Civil Lines, Rouse Avenue, Dwarka, Najafgarh, Gole Market, Pushp Vihar and Mandawali. Each centre has strong rooms, controlled entry and exit, and round-the-clock monitoring.
At present, the BJP has 115 councillors, AAP has 99, the Indraprastha Vikas Party has 15, and the Congress holds 8 seats.
The BJP is hoping to win all 12 seats in the bypolls. If that happens, its strength will rise to 127, giving it a solid and comfortable majority in the MCD.
