New Delhi: The political war of words over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on BR Ambedkar dramatically escalated on Sunday as the Congress party announced plans to hold press conferences in 150 different cities, demanding Shah’s resignation. The grand old party’s MPs from the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and CWC members will conduct these press conferences. Notably, the main opposition party has been calling for the Home Minister’s resignation over his statement on Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha. Shah remarked while criticizing the opposition party.
On Saturday, Congress leader Pawan Khera informed about the party’s big move of holding press conferences in 150 different cities across the nation demanding Shah’s resignation.
“On 22 and 23 (December) in more than 150 cities, our MPs of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the CWC members will do press conferences demanding the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah and will condemn the way he disrespected Babasaheb Ambedkar,” Pawan Khera said.
Khera also mentioned that the party plans to organize Babasaheb Ambedkar Samman Marches on December 24 and present a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu via district collectors.
“On 24 December, we will bring out a march at our district headquarters and will givea memorandum to collectors that will be addressed to the president – in that also we will repeat our demand of Amit Shah’s resignation…” said Khera.
What did Amit Shah say about Ambedkar?
The controversy surrounding BR Ambedkar erupted on Tuesday after Home Minister Shah’s remarks in the Rajya Sabha, stating that leaders of the grand old party would have secured a place in heaven if they had chanted God’s name instead of engaging in the “fashion of repeatedly invoking Ambedkar’s name.”
“Abhi ek fashion ho gaya hai – Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. Itna naam agar bhagwan ka lete to saat janmon tak swarg mil jata (It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar’. If they had taken God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven),” Shah had said.
Amit Shah also stated that while the BJP is pleased to see the Congress invoking Ambedkar’s name, the party should also acknowledge its true sentiments towards him.
