Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Raising concerns over the manner and speed at which toxic waste from the defunct Union Carbide site has been sent for disposal at Pithampur, the Congress alleged involvement of land mafia in the entire exercise.

State Congress president Jitu Patwari, while addressing media persons here on Friday, alleged that the government has turned a blind eye to people’s protests and concern over the incineration of UCC waste in Pithampur.

People are resorting to self-immolation in protest but the state government is least concerned, said the PCC chief.

Patwari claimed that during his visit to the site where the UCC toxic waste was incinerated some years ago he had found that the entire stretch of land adjoining the site had become infertile.

He claimed a sharp decline in land yield stating that only one quintal of crop is being produced on the land which once produced five quintals. Incineration of huge quantities of toxic waste would be detrimental and also have a harmful effect on the residents of Indore, he further added.
