Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has suspended Bengaluru police commissioner and other police officers in connection with the Bengaluru stampede incident.
Bengaluru stampede: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday ordered the suspension of Bengaluru police commissioner, and several other senior police officers in connection with the tragic stampede incident during RCB victory parade at the Chinnaswamy Stadium that left as many as 11 people dead, and 30 others injured on Wednesday.
The Chief Minister also directed the city police to arrest representatives of RCB, DNA event managers and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and handed over the probe to the one-man judicial commission headed by retired High Court judge of Karnataka Justice Michael Cunha.
The commission will submit its report in 30 days, Siddaramaiah said.
“Today the cabinet met and discussed yesterday’s tragedy in detail. The cabinet in its wisdom has taken a decision to entrust (the probe) into the incident to the one-man judicial commission headed by retired High Court judge of Karnataka Justice Michael Cunha and we have told the commission to give the report in 30 days,” the chief minister said.
Siddaramaiah suspends Bengaluru police chief
Talking to reporters in Bengaluru after the cabinet meeting, the CM said he had instructed the DGP and IGP of the state to immediately arrest the representatives of RCB, DNA event managers and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA).
“The cabinet has also taken a decision to immediately suspend the Circle Police Inspector of the Cubbon Park Police station and Assistant Commissioner of Police of that particular area, Deputy Commissioner of Police of central zone, Additional Commissioner of Police — who is incharge of the stadium and Commissioner of Police Bengaluru city,” he added.
Karnataka Police files FIR against RCB, KSCA
Earlier in the day, the Karnataka Police filed an FIR against the Karnataka Cricket Board Administrative Committee, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), among others, in the Bengaluru stampede incident.
According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Bengaluru, Shekar H Tekkannanavar, an FIR has been filed against RCB, DNA (event manager), Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Administrative Committee and others at Cubbon Park Police Station.
The FIR stated criminal negligence in the stampede incident. Sections 105, 125 (1)(2), 132, 121/1, 190 R/w 3 (5) have been invoked in the FIR.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court issued a notice to the state government over the stampede incident near the Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed the lives of 11 people and left several injured. The High Court took suo motu cognisance of the incident and asked for a further status report.
A stampede occured on Wednesday evening in front of the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the RCB team’s IPL victory celebrations. As many 11 people were killed in the incident, while 30 others sustained injuries.
