Mumbai: The City And Industrial Development Corporation Of Maharashtra Ltd (CIDCO), aims to construct a 26-km elevated roadway from Thane to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, aiming to mitigate traffic jams and ensure smooth access.

Certain test flights of planes from Navi Mumbai International Airport have proven successful, and CIDCO along with the Civil Aviation Ministry, are aiming to commence flight operations from this location in June. Previously, the government had launched the Atal Bridge linking Navi Mumbai and its airport to Mumbai several months back. CIDCO plans to link Navi Mumbai Airport with Thane in the future.

Current Routes

There are currently three main routes that connect Thane and Ulwe: the Thane-Belapur road, which continues straight after Belapur Fort for about 35 km; the Eastern Express Highway/Mumbai-Agra Road, which connects to Thane-Belapur Road from Airoli; and the scenic extension through Navi Mumbai from Thane-Belapur Road from Airoli to Vashi, which connects to Palm Beach and then continues from Belapur Fort to Ulwe wrapping about 46 km.

CIDCO’s Proposed Plan

CIDCO plans to construct a 26-km elevated roadway linking Thane city with Navi Mumbai Airport. The report for this elevated road project is currently being developed, and a financial advisor is in the process of being chosen for it. The inauguration of Navi Mumbai International Airport is set for June. To enhance the link between this airport and Mumbai-Thane, CIDCO and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) have initiated several infrastructure projects. Currently, the elevated road for the Thane-Navi Mumbai Airport will be included.

Route For Proposed Thane-NMIA Elevated Corridor

A 17-km elevated highway will be built from Dhan Nirankari Chowk close to Patni Maidan in Digha, to Palm Beach Road in Vashi. It will run alongside the Thane-Belapur Road. A double-decker elevated road, nine kilometers long, will be built from Palm Beach Road straight to the airport.

Expense For Thane-NMIA Elevated Corridor

The 26-kilometer corridor is projected to have an expense of Rs 8,000 crore. CIDCO representatives have stated that due to the size of the project, obtaining approvals, acquiring land, and securing environmental clearances, it is not feasible to provide a timeline for the project’s start and finish.
