Mumbai: In a remarkable celebration of International Women’s Day, Central Railway will operate the prestigious Vande Bharat Express with an all-women crew on March 8, 2025. This initiative highlights the growing role of women in railway operations and promotes gender inclusivity in the sector.
Train No. 22223, the CSMT-Sainagar Shirdi Vande Bharat Express, will make history as it is helmed entirely by women, from the loco pilot to the ticket examiners. The train will depart from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) at 6:20 AM, marking a significant moment in the Indian Railways’ journey toward gender equality.
At the forefront of this historic journey is Surekha Yadav, Asia’s First Woman Loco Pilot, who will be steering the train alongside Assistant Loco Pilot Sangeeta Kumari. Their leadership exemplifies the skill and dedication of women in the railway industry.
Ensuring the smooth operation of the train is Train Manager Shweta Ghone, supported by a team of women Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) who will guide passengers and ensure their comfort. The ticket-checking team includes, Anushka K. P., M. J. Rajput ( Head Ticket Examiners), Sarika Ojha, Suvarna Pashte, Kavita Maral, and Manisha Ram (Senior Ticket Examiners).
“This initiative is part of Central Railway’s larger commitment to empowering women in key roles and fostering a more inclusive workforce. The all-women-operated Vande Bharat Express is expected to inspire future generations of women to take up challenging roles in railway operations and beyond” said an official.
