New Delhi: Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry has summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma amid escalating border tensions between the two countries.

The Bangladesh government has alleged that the Indian Army had allegedly opened fire in the border area. After this alleged incident, there has been a hostile and tense impression in the relations between the two neighbouring countries.

The incident took place on the intervening night of January 10 and 11 at the border outpost of Nawada when a group of 15-20 armed smugglers ignored the warnings of the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and tried to forcibly take the smuggled goods across the border.

The BSF seized a huge quantity of Phensedyl, a codeine-based cough syrup, early on Saturday, January 11.

According to the statement issued by the BSF, on Friday night, some smugglers entered the Indian border from the Bangladesh side and despite the orders and warnings of the security personnel, they did not go back, after which they reportedly attacked the troops.

In retaliation, the BSF had to fire empty rounds.

“To protect themselves, the jawans were forced to fire two live rounds in self-defence, successfully repelling the smugglers. Following the incident, 572 bottles of Phensedyl, a sharp-edged weapon, and a high-beam torch were recovered from the scene,” said BSF spokesperson.
