In Doda district, flood waters have breached into homes as residential areas are inundated. The heavy rainfall has also resulted in cracks in mountains in various places across Jammu and Kashmir, with horrifying videos surfacing on social media, showing rivers in spate and structures washed away.

The floodwaters have damaged several houses and shops in Jammu region, as a portion of the road along the fourth Tawi bridge was washed away in the floods following incessant heavy rainfall. According to locals, approximately 35 houses and 6 shops were affected by the floods in the Belicharana area of Jammu.
58 trains cancelled due to Jammu floods
Meanwhile, the Northern Railways on Wednesday ordered the cancellation of 58 trains to and from Jammu and Katra stations, while 64 trains were short-terminated or short-originated at various stations in the division in view of the devastation caused by record rains.
The affected trains include the Rajgir-Udhampur, Varanasi-Jammutvi, Chhapra-Udhampur, Guwahati-Jammutvi, Kamakhya-Jammutvi. Vaishno Devi Katra-Ghazipur City Express, Bhagalpur-Jammutvi Express, while the Chhapra Special scheduled for August 28 has also been cancelled.

“Due to heavy soil erosion and flash floods in the Chakki River, rail traffic in the Jammu division has been temporarily suspended. Trains will remain cancelled, diverted, short-terminated or short-originated until further notice,” said the public relations officer (PRO) of Northern Railway, Jammu Division.
Railways operates special train for stranded tourists
On Thursday, the Railways deployed a special unreserved train from Jammu station to New Delhi, to ensure a smooth journey for tourists stranded in the UT due to the heavy monsoon rains.
Scores of people, especially pilgrims, were stranded as heavy rains lashed the Jammu region in the last two days severely disrupting rail and road traffic, and also due to a landslide that struck Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra, claiming 34 lives. Jammu region recorded its heaviest rainfall since 1910, at 380 mm by Wednesday morning.
30 killed in Vaishno Devi landslide
On Tuesday, a devastating landslide occurred near the Vaishno Devi temple in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, claiming more than 30 lives and injuring 20 others. The disaster struck on Tuesday afternoon, around 3 pm, when heavy rains triggered a massive landslide near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkuwari, about halfway along the 12-kilometre trek from Katra to the shrine.
“People injured in the landslide near Vaishno Devi temple are getting good treatment…14 people are undergoing treatment at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital…More than 30 people have lost their lives, and the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has taken the responsibility of sending the bodies to their native places,” BJP MP Jugal Kishore Sharma told news agency ANI.
