The shooter, identified as Naveed Akram, 24, of Bonnyrigg, Sydney’s south-west, was confirmed by a senior law enforcement official. He is likely to be of Pakistani origin, but it is yet to be confirmed by the authorities.

Akram’s driver’s license was found at the scene, based on which he was identified. The licence mentioned his address as Bonnyrigg. As per his Facebook account, Akram studied at Central Queensland University in Sydney and Hamdard University in Islamabad. He also studied at Al Murad Institute in Sydney.

The police stated that during the operation, Akram was shot and arrested, he is in police custody, currently receiving treatment from emergency medical services.

The police have already begun to search his Bonnyrigg home in relation to the ongoing inquiry. According to officials, the property has been in possession of Akram’s family for about a year.

Since the attack, several claims have taken over social media, including posts asserting that Akram is Pakistani and images showing him wearing a Pakistani cricket jersey. It is also being claimed that he is wearing a Pakistan cricket jersey in his driving licence photo.

The second gunman has been shot dead at the scene, police have confirmed.

Deadly attack during Jewish festival

The shooting has left at least 11 people dead, including children, and more than 25 others injured, making it one of the deadliest attacks in recent Australian history. Among those killed was Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a Chabad emissary who was attending the event.

The Jewish community leaders confirmed that the shooting occurred during a gathering to commemorate Hanukkah, a Jewish festival which witnessed the lighting of the Menorah candles at sundown. Alex Ryvchin, the co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, told Sky News that the event was meant to be filled with happiness. “This was the Jewish community coming together to celebrate a happy occasion,” he said. “If this were a deliberate attack, it’s beyond anything we could have imagined.” He also confirmed that his media adviser was injured in the attack.

A bomb was also recovered from a car at the site.
