Mumbai: In line with directives from Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the BMC is set to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study for the proposed helipad along the Mumbai Coastal Road. This crucial assessment will evaluate potential locations to ensure the project meets safety, accessibility, and environmental standards.
The BMC will be appointing consultants to assess the feasibility of using the Worli Jetty for multi-modal transport, exploring its potential to support various modes of travel.
On Tuesday, during a review meeting led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Eknath Shinde suggested that the BMC consider setting up a helipad along the coastal road. A senior civic official mentioned that the helipad could be located on the temporary jetty built for the coastal road project, opposite Worli Dairy.
“There were two jetties—one near Amarsons Garden has been dismantled, while the Worli jetty remains intact as the coastal police had requested space for surveillance. The area is large enough to accommodate a helicopter landing. We will ask a consultant to study and recommend whether the Worli jetty can be utilised for multi-modal transport, including air and water transport.”
The BMC is also constructing a four-storey underground parking facility at Haji Ali, with a capacity to accommodate 1,235 vehicles, including parking for 77 buses. While the Haji Ali parking facility was initially expected to be operational by May 2025, the revised design has pushed the completion date to 2026.
The estimated cost for the construction of parking facilities at Haji Ali, Amarsons Garden, and Worli Seaface is Rs 3,000 crore. However, due to the delays, the overall project cost is likely to rise, and the timeline may be further extended, as per civic sources. Meanwhile, the BMC has temporarily halted the parking facility project at Breach Candy following strong opposition from local residents.
