A 20-year-old biker died, and his friend, who was riding pillion, suffered serious injuries after their bike lost control and crashed into a divider of the Rajiv Gandhi bridge in Bhiwandi at 4.45am on Sunday, said police.

The incident took place within the jurisdiction of the Nizampura police station when they were on the way to Napoli. The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Saif Ansari, 20, and the injured as Afad Ansari, 18, both residents of the Gaibi Nagar area in Shantinagar.

According to the police, Saif, who did not wear a helmet and had no number plate on his bike, drove recklessly and hit a divider after losing control, causing the duo to fall on the road.

The police said that bystanders and passersby alerted them about the incident. Both were taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where Saif was declared dead on arrival and Afad is underway treatment.

Vishwash Dagale, senior police inspector, said, “During the preliminary investigation, it suggests that Saif recklessly drove his bike, which resulted in him meeting with an accident. We have filed an FIR under the relevant sections of Bharatiya Naya Sanhita.”

The locals raised a concern about the street light being turned off while the vehicles were continuing to move on the bridge, and the internet cable wires were seen on the street pole, passing over it in illegal ways.
