India-Bangladesh War: A senior leader of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami– a pro-Pakistan Islamist political party– has threatened to wage war against India if New Delhi attempts a military intervention in Bangladesh when the party comes to power.

Why Jamaat leader threatened ‘Ghazwa-e-Hind’?

Addressing a public reception in New York organized by the Bangladesh American Association, the party’s deputy Amir or ‘Naib’, Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, stated that the Jamaat was ready for ‘Ghazwa-e-Hind’– a term often used by Muslim fundamentalists to refer to a holy war to conquer the Indian subcontinent, allegedly prophesied in some Hadith.

The Bangladeshi politician and former MP claimed that at least 50 lakh young men in Bangladesh to ready to participate in the war against India to “erase the stigma”, referring to the accusations of the Jamaat-e-Islami supporting Pakistan during the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war.

“People believe that India could attack Bangladesh if the Jamaat comes to power. I pray that they enter. This will erase the stigma attached to us in 1971 and give us a chance to prove ourselves as true freedom fighters,” Taher said at the reception on Saturday.

Many people say that if Jamaat comes to power, India might attack. I pray that they enter. This will erase the stigma attached to us in 1971. Then we will have a chance to prove ourselves as true freedom fighters.”

He also claimed that ousted PM Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League will support India if it attacks Bangladesh.

How radical Islamists have become powerful in Bangladesh?

Notably, analysts believe Bangladesh has rapidly gone down the path of radical Islamism since the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government came to the helm in Dhaka following the ouster of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina in August last year

Recent media reports suggest that radical elements, who wield considerable influence in the current regime, are making efforts to transform the Bangladesh Army into an Islamic military institution, along the lines of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
