On Thursday (15th January), the house of a Hindu man was set ablaze in Gowainghat Upazila in Sylhet Division of Bangladesh.
According to reports, the victim was identified as Birendra Kumar. He works as a school teacher and is known as ‘Jhunu Master’ in the area.
In visuals that have surfaced on social media, it can be seen that his house is completely gutted by the fire. All his belongings, including furniture and documents, have turned into ashes. The damage is estimated to be in lakhs of rupees.

Reportedly, the locals attempted to extinguish the fire on learning about the matter. Later, the fire department was called it and they were able to bring the situation under control.
“If the fire service had been fully operational in Gowainghat, Birendra Master’s house would not have burned down like this today,” a local was quoted as saying.
The incident has created an atmopshere of fear and tension among Hindu minorities who are living in the area.
