Lynching amid wider unrest
The lynching took place during a period of heightened tension in Bangladesh following the death of anti-India and jihadi political activist Sharif Osman Hadi. Hadi, a key figure of last year’s so-called student-led July protests against the Hasina government and spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha, died on Thursday (18th December) in a hospital in Singapore.
Hadi had been undergoing treatment after being shot in the head by masked gunmen in Dhaka on 12th December. His death triggered widespread anger and unrest across parts of the country, with protests and clashes reported from several areas.
On Friday (19th December), the interim government strongly condemned the murder of the Hindu youth and urged people to remain calm. The Yunus government had issued an appeal in which it said that “no place for such violence in the new Bangladesh” and assured that those responsible would not be spared.”
