The introduction of the Facial Recognition System (FRS) for the Amarnath Yatra in 2025 marked a significant enhancement in the security framework for the annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir.
The system aimed to enhance pilgrim safety by identifying potential threats, such as terrorists, overground workers, or other blacklisted individuals, in real-time using facial recognition technology integrated with surveillance cameras. The FRS is deployed for the first time during the Amarnath Yatra.
The system is specifically introduced along the Pahalgam and Baltal routes, and on every camp of pilgrims from Jammu to Kashmir. The primary objective is to bolster security by identifying potential threats, including suspected terrorists, overground workers, or other blacklisted individuals, in real-time.
The FRS utilises advanced surveillance cameras equipped with facial recognition technology to scan and match faces against a database of known suspects. The system is integrated with images of active terrorists and other individuals on security watchlists, enabling immediate alerts to security forces if a match is detected. This real-time identification capability enhances the ability to respond swiftly to potential threats during the high-traffic pilgrimage. The introduction of FRS reflects a shift toward technology-driven policing to counter Terror threats.
