A woman, after whom a village in Uttar Pradesh was named, died from tuberculosis on Saturday. Kusuma Nain, a dacoit, was serving a lifetime imprisonment in Etawah jail. She was shifted to Saifai Medical College in Lucknow for the treatment of her prolonged tuberculosis disease but could not survive and took her last breath in KGMU on Saturday night. Who was Kusuma Nain?
Kusuma was born in 1964 in Tikri village. She developed feelings for Madhav Mallah. After they ran away together, her father stepped in, returning her home and organizing her marriage to Kedar Nai. Nevertheless, Madhav, with the help of the infamous bandit Vikram Mallah, kidnapped Kusuma from her in-laws’ house, bringing them back together.
What did Kusuma Nain do?
She was a very dangerous woman and killed 14 people in broad daylight and took out the eyes of two men in Asta village. She also set ablaze the entire village. Forty-one years later, when she took her last breath, everyone recalled that terrifying phase. The people of Asta village are now lighting lamps of ghee (clarified butter) to celebrate her demise, as her death brought justice and relief to the villagers.
Kusuma ruled the region for 25 years and was the most dreaded dacoit in the history of Chambal. She invented inhumane ways to torture her enemies.
There was a conversation about Kusuma Nain seeking revenge for the Behmai massacre involving Phoolan Devi. Supporters of Kusuma argue that she endured similar hardships as Phoolan Devi. The villagers continue to recall that tragic day, and a memorial has been established to honor those who died in the incident.
How She Became Bandit?
Nain was forced into crime. She joined Vikram Mallah’s gang for 8 years. After the death of Mallah, she joined the gang of notorious dacoits Lalaram and Shririn. She was also associated with Ram Asre Tiwar’s (Fakkad Baba) gang, increasing her dominance in the region.
Kusuma Nain gained a reputation for her brutal methods, causing significant suffering to hostages by branding them with heated wood and beating them with chains. Experienced officers from the Uttar Pradesh Police recall her gang as one of the most feared in the region.
