Chatters in MEA suggest that caution is rising over payments for Russian Oil in Yuan
India’s recent move to settle a portion of its Russian oil imports in Chinese yuan marks a nuanced shift in its trade strategy amid evolving global economic dynamics. While India continues to maintain its longstanding neutral stance on de-dollarisation, this adoption of yuan payments reflects pragmatism in navigating sanctions and currency conversion challenges, rather than a direct political endorsement of replacing the US dollar. This shift aligns with broader BRICS efforts to streamline trade by using local currencies and reduce dependency on Western currencies, spearheaded by leaders like Modi, Putin, and Xi. Indian refiners, including state-owned companies, have completed yuan-denominated transactions to ease payment processes and circumvent restrictions in dollar channels. However, India remains cautious, publicly reiterating that de-dollarisation is not its policy or strategy, focusing instead on diversifying currency use and mitigating risks from geopolitical pressures. This development signals India’s balancing act between strategic autonomy and pragmatic economic adjustments within the complex BRICS framework in a shifting global order.
