New Delhi: In a major development that promises to give a major boost to India’s satellite internet market, after Elon Musk‘s Starlink, Apple’s satellite communications partner, Globalstar, has expressed interest in launching its services in the country. It is important to note that if the Modi government grants permission, Elon Musk won’t be the only one bringing satellite internet to India through Starlink. Globalstar could also enter this space.

Apart from these two, companies like OneWeb, Project Kuiper, and Orbit Connect have also sought approval to launch satellite internet services in India.

Globalstar Submits Application to the Government

According to a report by ET Telecom, Globalstar’s internet terminals operate in low Earth orbit. Globalstar has submitted an application to the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe) to begin its operations. The report further added that the company may also apply to the Department of Telecommunications for a GMPCS license, which is a key step in launching satellite internet services.

Only after receiving approvals from both agencies will the company be able to move forward with launching satellite internet in India.

Globalstar Has Obtained Test Spectrum

According to the report, Globalstar has already obtained test spectrum from the Department of Telecommunications to demonstrate the use of satellite-based disaster management. To explain in simple terms, the company is using satellite internet for activities related to disaster management. Now, it needs a commercial license. Only after getting the commercial license can the general public be connected to satellite internet services.

Apple and Globalstar Working Together

Reports suggest that both the American tech giants, Apple and Globalstar, are currently working together. Globalstar is providing direct-to-cell satellite internet services to iPhone users. This means satellite calls are being used for emergency services. Apple partnered with Globalstar in 2022. This support is currently available to Apple users in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and a few other countries. India is not included in this list.
