Kolkata: The Sealdah court in Kolkata’s West Bengal on Saturday pronounced Sanjay Roy, the accused of R G Kar rape and murder case guilty. The court will pronounce Sanjay Roy’s sentence on January 20. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the city police, was charged with the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at a state-run hospital in north Kolkata on August 9, 2024. The accused was arrested by the Kolkata Police on August 10, the day after the victim’s body was discovered in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s seminar room.

The court stated that charges under Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita Sections 64, 66, and 103/1 have been framed against the accused. There is a complaint against the accused that he went to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, entered the seminar room, and assaulted and murdered the lady doctor who was resting there.
The court’s decission relied on forensic evidence, including reports that pointed out Roy’s involvement in the incident. His DNA was found both at the crime scene and on the victim’s body. The session Judge Anirban Das also stated that the maximum possible sentence for Roy would be the death penalty, while the minimum sentence would be life imprisonment.
Earlier, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has sought the death penalty for Roy. The investigative agency also arrested former RG Kar principal Sandeep Ghosh and Tala police station officer Abhijeet Mondal for allegedly attempting to destroy evidence in the case.
Additionally, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for financial misconduct during his time period in office, following a case registered by the CBI. However, both individuals were granted bail after the agency failed to register a chargesheet against them within the 90-days.
The crime sparked nationwide protests led by junior doctors in Kolkata, demanding for justice for the victim and strong security arrangements in state-run hospitals. Opposition political parties including the BJP and the CPI(M), also particptaed in protest. Members of the civil society in Kolkata and some other cities of the state held midnight rallies called “Reclaim the night” to honor the victim, with some referring to her as “Abhaya” and others as “Tilottama,” as they pushed for justice.
After taking suo motu notice of the rape and murder case at R G Kar hospital, the Superme Court set up a National Task Force (NTF) to recommend safety protocols for doctors and other medical professionals working across the country. The NTF submitted its report to the Supreme Court in November of the previous year.
