Weather Update: Above-normal rainfall to continue in September as North, West and Central India to see more downpours, IMD warns

People in Northwest India, already complaining about a very wet monsoon, may have to deal with even more rain through September. The region has already received 23 per cent more rainfall than usual since the monsoon began on June 1, and weather models suggest that heavy and widespread rain is likely to continue well into the month. As per a report in HT, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that above-normal rainfall is expected in many parts of north, west, and central India at least until September 4, with generally wet weather likely to last until September 18.

Earlier, on July 31, IMD had predicted that the country could receive over 106 per cent of the long-period average rainfall during the second half of the monsoon season, covering August and September. At that time, officials said August rainfall would be normal, but September would bring above-normal rain.

Weather scientist M. Rajeevan, former secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, said, “In the next two to three days, there will be more rain in north India, including areas already facing heavy showers. After that, central India will also see more rain. The next 10 days look good for the monsoon.”

IMD director general M. Mohapatra explained that the intense rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh is due to the interaction of a western disturbance with monsoon winds, which has caused flooding in several rivers across northern states, according to the report in HT.

August already wettest month for Delhi this year

August has turned out to be the wettest month of the year for Delhi, with rainfall measuring about 60% more than normal, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

On Tuesday, non-stop showers caused waterlogging and traffic jams in several parts of the city.

Normally, Delhi gets around 200.8 mm of rain in August, but this month the city has already recorded 321.4 mm, nearly 60% above average. For comparison, last year in August, the city received 390.3 mm of rain, which was 67% above normal.

IMD data also shows that in 2024, Delhi hit its annual rainfall mark by August 30, with rainfall reaching 390.3 mm just for the month. The city also saw three times its normal rainfall in June (243.3 mm) and almost normal rainfall in July (203.7 mm).

With 12 rainy days already in August and more showers predicted, the monthly rainfall total could rise even higher. Officials said Delhi has already surpassed its seasonal monsoon average, which spans from June 1 to September 30. So far, the city has received over 700 mm of rain, closing in on the annual average of 774.4 mm.
