Devajit Saikia on Saturday filed his nomination for the post of the BCCI secretary whereas Prabhtej Bhatia applied for the post of the treasurer, with both officials being the only applicants for the two roles.

Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh’s Bhatia has applied for the treasurer’s position after the post was left vacant by the exit of Ashish Shelar, who recently took oath as a cabinet minister in the Maharashtra government.

Who is Devajit Saika? 

Saikia, has been serving as the interim Secretary of the BCCI following Jay Shah’s appointment as Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), succeeding Greg Barclay.

BCCI President Roger Binny nominated Saikia as interim Secretary after Shah’s departure. Using his constitutional authority, Binny appointed Saikia as acting Secretary on a temporary basis until a permanent Secretary is selected as per BCCI regulations.

In a formal letter to Saikia, Binny referred to Clause 7(1)(d) of the BCCI constitution, granting him secretarial powers. Saikia is also the Advocate General of Assam.

“The president shall in the event of vacancy or indisposition, shall delegate the functions to another office bearer until the vacancy is duly filled up or indisposition ceases.

“Accordingly, I delegate the functions of secretary to you till the post is filled up by processes laid down as per BCCI rules and regulations. I am confident you will perform the duties to the best of your abilities and with aplomb,” Binny wrote to Saikia. 

Saikia was nominated as the interim secretary by the BCCI president Roger Bonny after Shah had left the role. As per the election schedule on the board’s website, the window to file the nomination application was open till 4:00pm on Saturday afternoon and according to sources, only Saikia and Bhatia have put forth their nominations.
