‘I’m Just A Simple Buddhist Monk’: Dalai Lama Marks 90th Birthday With Message Of Compassion & Peace | X/@dalailama
Dharamshala: On his 90th birthday, Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama delivered a deeply reflective message, describing himself as “just a simple Buddhist monk” and urging his followers to embrace compassion, warm-heartedness, and peace of mind in a troubled world.
The milestone was celebrated by followers across the globe, with special events held in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile.
The 14th Dalai Lama, who has lived in exile in India since 1959, addressed hundreds of well-wishers, thanking them for using the occasion to promote kindness and altruism rather than focusing on mere celebration.
Dalai Lama’s Message
In his message, the Dalai Lama said, “While it is important to work for material development, it is vital to focus on achieving peace of mind through cultivating a good heart and by being compassionate, not just toward near and dear ones, but toward everyone.”
He noted that he does not personally celebrate birthdays, but acknowledged the positive spirit in which the day was being marked. “Thank you for using the opportunity of my birthday to cultivate peace of mind and compassion,” he said.
Quoting the 8th-century Indian philosopher Shantideva, the Dalai Lama reaffirmed his lifelong commitment to helping others,
“As long as space endures,
As long as sentient beings remain,
Until then, may I too remain
To dispel the miseries of the world.”
‘Focus on Values, Not Celebration’
Looking ahead, the Dalai Lama said he would continue championing human values, religious harmony, Tibetan culture, and ancient Indian wisdom, particularly teachings that address the workings of the mind and emotions.
He also expressed hope that he might live to be over 130, drawing warm applause from his audience.
