In shocking news from the football world, Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota passed away on Thursday in a car accident. The news about the passing away of a 28-year-old was reported by the Spanish publication Marca.
Reports suggest the Portuguese forward and his brother were involved in an accident in the city of Zamora in northwestern Spain. “Two young people die in an accident on the A-52 (Palacios de Sanabria). The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station (Northern Zone of the @DiputacionZA Consortium) responds,” Zamora’s Provincial Council said in a statement.
“The vehicle caught fire, and the flames spread to the vegetation. They were 28 and 26 years old. RIP.”
Diogo Jota career
Born in Porto, Jota started his playing career through Paços de Ferreira’s youth setup before moving to Atlético Madrid in 2016, followed by a transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League the next year.
But it was at Liverpool that he had his best professional stint. Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton for €44.7 million. Since then, he has made 182 appearances for the Reds, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists. In that time, he has won three titles with the Reds: a Premier League title (2024-25), an FA Cup title (2021-22) , and a League Cup title (2021-22).
The 28-year-old was also part of the Portugal squad that won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
