New Delhi: Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy launched a scathing attack against Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, accusing his government of pushing the state into a “debt trap” by borrowing heavily with “nothing to show” in terms of development or welfare.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief pointed out that the current government has borrowed an amount equal to 44 percent of the total debt incurred during the YSRCP’s five-year term. He claimed this borrowing has not translated into development or welfare outcomes.

“@ncbn garu, you claim decades of experience as CM and deep understanding of governance. But in one year, your government borrowed 44% of what we did in five, without delivering any development or welfare,” Jagan wrote.

Jagan cited figures from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) to back his claims:

Fiscal Deficit to GSDP rose from 4.08% to 5.12 percent

Revenue Deficit to GSDP increased from 2.65% to 3.61 percent

Debt-to-GSDP climbed to 35.64 percent, despite the absence of external shocks like the pandemic

Only 23.49% of borrowings were used for capital expenditure in 2024–25, compared to 33.25% under YSRCP

“Despite claims of administrative experience, these figures point to a worsening financial situation,” Jagan said.

It is important to note that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had earlier acknowledged that the state is burdened with a debt of Rs10 lakh crore and is paying Rs 40,000 crore annually in interest.

Naidu has also stated that the TDP is a case study in how to run a government, contrasting it with the YSRCP, which he claims exemplifies poor governance.
