The Palitana city of Bhavnagar district of Gujarat is known to be the first city in the world to have completely banned non-vegetarian food. As per a report by Times of India, the local government decided to ban non-veg in the city as a result of continuous protests by more than 200 Jain monks in the year 2014. As the report says, about 200 Jain monks went on a hunger strike to close about 250 butcher shops and as a result, , the government had to take the decision to completely ban non-veg respecting the sentiments of the Jain community.

However, banning non-veg food does not cause a dearth of good food in the city. Palitana is a prominent Jain pilgrimage site with various vegetarian items that have a great taste. The ban of non-veg items in the city only helped it maintain its sanctity, attracting more vegetarian restaurants to cater to visitors.

Apart from all this, Palitana is renowned city of India, known for Jainism values and cultural history. It is considered one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Jains and is home to the Shatrunjaya Hills, which feature over 800 Jain temples.
