A fatwa has been issued against actor-turned-politician Vijay for his controversial iftar party that he had organised on March 7 in Chennai. A Sunni Muslim body in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, has accused the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief of disrespecting Islam and claimed that he invited alcoholics for iftar.
National President of the All India Muslim Jamaat and Chief Mufti of Chashme Darul Ifta, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilly, issued the fatwa against Vijay, and urged Muslims in Tamil Nadu to maintain distance from the actor and his “Muslim appeasing” tactics.
“Vijay Thalapathy is using Muslim sentiments to make his way into politics from the film world when his history is full of anti-Muslim sentiment,” Maulana Razvi said, according to a report in India Today.
The maulana mentioned, “In his film The Beast, he has linked Muslims and the entire Muslim community with terrorism and militancy. In the film, Thalapathy tries to show Muslims as ‘monsters’ and ‘devils’. And now since he is entering politics and he wants votes, he is doing Muslim appeasement.”
He also slammed Vijay for hampering the sanctity of the holy month of Ramzan by inviting alcoholics and gamblers at his iftar party. “These people were neither fasting nor following Islamic practices,” he said.
The maulana then urged the people of Tamil Nadu to boycott the actor and his political party, and not participate with him or invite him to religious programmes across the state.
This is not the first time that Vijay’s iftar party made headlines. Last week, the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath had filed a complaint against the actor, accusing him of failing to hold up the true spirit of iftar.
The complaint also alleged that Vijay’s guards treated those who attended the iftar party “like cows”.
Vijay has not yet issued an official statement regarding the matter.
For those unversed, Vijay is currently gearing up for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, and he will reportedly contest independently, without forming any alliance with the AIADMK.
