Chandigarh: Five months after it registered its historic hat-trick by winning assembly polls for the third consecutive term in Haryana, the ruling BJP in the state on Wednesday swept the municipal election winning nine out of 10 municipal corporations in the state.

The municipal elections results also came as a major setback to the Congress as its senior leader and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, also faced drubbing in his citadel – Sonepat and Rohtak district.

Except for Manesar municipal corporation, the BJP snatched all the nine mayoral seats from Congress.

In Gurugram, BJP candidate Raj Rani Malhotra won the mayoral poll defeating Congress’ Seema Pahuja by a margin of over 1.79 lakh votes. In Faridabad, BJP’s Praveen Joshi triumphed over Congress’ candidate Lata Rani.

In Rohtak, BJP candidate Ramavtar Balmiki won the mayoral election defeating Congress’ Suraj Mal Kiloi by a margin of over 45,000. In Sonepat, BJP’s Rajiv Jain trounced Congress’ Kamal Dewan.

In Panipat, BJP’s Komal Saini who defeated Congress’ Savita Garg became the new mayor. BJP’s candidate won by a margin of over 1.23 lakh votes. Congress failed to win even a single seat in the municipal corporation.

In Karnal, Congress candidate Manoj Wadhwa was defeated by BJP’s Renu Bala Gupta by a margin of over 25,000 votes.

In Rohtak, the BJP candidate Ram Avtar Valmiki won mayoral poll by defeating Congress’ Suraj Mal Kiloi by a margin of over 45,000 votes.

In Ambala, BJP’s Shailaija Sachdeva defeated Congress’ Amisha Chawla. In Yamunanagar, BJP’s Suman Bahmani defeated Congress Kirna Devi.

In Hisar, BJP candidate Praveen Popli won the mayoral election defeating Congress’ Krishan Singla by a margin of over 64,000 votes.

The Manesar municipal corporation mayoral seat was bagged by an independent candidate Inderjeet Yadav who defeated BJP’s Sunder Lal by a margin of about 2,000 votes. Yadav is said to be close to Union minister Rao Inderjit Singh.

PEOPLE’S STAMP ON BJP GOVT POLICIES: CM

Reacting over the municipal elections, chief minister Nayab Saini said that the poll results are an approval of people on the works and policies of the BJP government and now the “triple engine government’’ will work at a fast pace to realise its resolve of a “developed Haryana, developed India’’.

The state BJP chief Mohan Lal Badoli, while thanking the voters, said that the people of Haryana have once again reposed their faith in the party.
