Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Former Chief Minister Uma Bharti expressed her deep sorrow over the tragic stampede that took place at Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, calling the loss of even a single life “heavy.” However, she criticised those blaming the entire Kumbh arrangements, terming it as “disgraceful.”

Speaking at a programme organised by the Mata Betibai Social Welfare Foundation on Sunday, Bharti acknowledged the multiple dimensions the incident brought to light but emphasized that the stampede-like situation arose due to sudden removal of barricades and ensuing confusion. She assured that the full details would emerge in time. During her address, Bharti also highlighted the programme’s theme— “Shun Liquor, Drink Milk”— aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles.

Clears air on political role

Bharti also addressed rumours about her involvement in projects outside the BJP organisation, stating that she is not sidelined, as speculated. She clarified that her work is not driven by any political neglect, dismissing hearsay suggesting she is pursuing personal projects due to lack of opportunities within the party. In a conversation with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Bharti said that she never sought positions like Governor or Rajya Sabha member. Instead, she reiterated her deep commitment to the Clean Ganga Mission, emphasising the importance of ensuring the flow of the Ganga and Yamuna for the nation’s survival.

During her speech, she also praised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for ensuring smooth arrangements at Mahakumbh, noting the event’s unprecedented scale and its role in reviving spiritual awakening among masses. Bharti said that she secretly visited am to take a holy dip, as she wanted to avoid any disruption caused by her presence. She once again voiced her dedication to the Clean Ganga Mission.
