Mumbai is set to launch its second cable-stayed bridge and the first one on its city landscape soon, marking a significant milestone in its infrastructure development. The construction work of the new six-lane bridge at Reay Road, which will be the city’s first cable-stayed bridge on land, is almost complete.

“All foundation work, girder launching, and superstructure work have been completed. The construction work of the Cable-Stayed Road Over Bridge is now complete, and only finishing work is underway. The bridge is expected to open soon for public transport,” said an official.

The construction work of this Cable-Stayed ROB started on 14th February 2022. The length of the ROB is 385 meters + 2 Down Ramps. The ROB has 06 lanes. The cost of the project is around 266 crore. The bridge was initially slated to open in November, but due to some encroachment issues, it got delayed slightly.

Asked about the construction of the ROB, an official said that the Reay Road Cable-Stayed ROB has a central pylon system, wherein stay cables are erected on the central spine girder of the bridge.

“Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation, also known as MahaRail, has designed the Cable-Stayed ROB with limited piers and less foundation, with the help of the Cable-Stayed System,” the official further added.

“The construction scheme has been chosen to be segmental construction, which helps with better quality control and minimum construction time. The individual segments are prefabricated at the fabrication yard and transported to the site for erection, while for the straight alignment, a simple steel girder system is adopted for easy and speedy construction,” he said.

The new Cable-Stayed ROB with a longer span minimizes infringements with underground utilities. According to an official, bridge structure will allow traffic movement through Barrister Nath Pai Road under the Cable-Stayed Bridge, and it will also maintain the required vertical clearance for the passage of vehicles over the Cable-Stayed Bridge under the Eastern Freeway, as per IRC standards, with the required vertical clearance below the deck for the MbPT Railway Track in the same location.

The new Cable-Stayed Road Over Bridge will add more aesthetic appeal to the world-class heritage structure. Additionally, the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) has designed architectural LED lighting on the proposed bridge, which will enhance the aesthetic appeal and improve the safety parameters with a Bridge Health Monitoring System.
