Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been killed in an airstrike on his residence in Tehran, according to multiple reports citing Iranian state-affiliated media and international sources.
Ahmadinejad, who served as president from 2005 to 2013 and was a member of the Expediency Discernment Council, was reportedly killed late on Saturday in the Narmak neighbourhood of the capital. Iranian outlets, including the Iranian Labour News Agency (ILNA), stated that he died alongside several bodyguards and companions when the building was struck.
Media close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the loss of three members of Ahmadinejad’s security detail in the incident.
The attack forms part of a broader wave of joint US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran that began on Saturday. These operations have targeted high-level regime figures and military infrastructure, which resulted in the deaths of several senior officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Ahmadinejad’s presidency was marked by confrontational rhetoric towards the West, particularly over Iran’s nuclear programme, and notorious statements denying the Holocaust and calling for Israel’s elimination. His political influence had diminished in recent years, though he remained part of key advisory bodies.
