As India and the United States announced their interim trade agreement framework on Saturday, 7th February, an unexpected detail caught people’s attention online. What became apparent was that the map shared by the official handle of the US trade representative body included the entire Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh region, along with Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) and Aksai Chin, as part of India.

To be clear, India has never needed any external validation for its territorial claims. New Delhi has always maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is an inseparable part of the country. Still, many observers see this as a noticeable shift from how the US has handled such maps in the past.

Why this map matters and how it’s roasting Pakistan

Earlier maps released by US agencies, including the State Department, often showed clear markings separating POK, keeping in mind Pakistan’s position. This time, however, there was no such distinction. The entire region was shown as part of India, which many believe sends a strong diplomatic signal.

The timing is also important. India and the US are trying to reset ties after a rocky phase. Last year in August, US President Donald Trump imposed steep 50% tariffs on Indian goods amid disagreements over India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. Trump had also spoken about bringing India and Pakistan back into the same strategic frame, something previous US administrations had moved away from.

Against this backdrop, the new map is being seen as a departure from earlier messaging. The latest map also shows Aksai Chin, a part of eastern Ladakh that China forcibly occupies. In the past, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has repeatedly objected to what it called incorrect depictions of its borders by foreign agencies. The latest US map appears to address those concerns.

The decision sparked a strong reaction on social media platforms. Defence analysts and geopolitical authorities reacted positively to this decision.

Others see it as a reverse for Pakistan, especially at a time when Pakistan has been engaging Washington so actively. Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir has visited the US at least twice in recent times, and he has even met with President Trump, including a well-publicised lunch in June last year.
