50-year-old Hindu medical shop owner, Khokon Chandra Das, who was attacked by a violent mob in Shariatpur district of Bangladesh on 31st December, succumbed to his injuries in the Dhaka Medical College on Friday (3rd January).

Confirming his death, Additional Superintendent of Police Tanveer Hussain said, “We contacted the hospital and learned that he (Khokon Das) has passed away. We are investigating the matter, and those responsible for this incident will be brought to justice soon.”

Das was attacked when he was returning home after closing his shop. The attackers stabbed him with sharp weapons, struck him on the head, and then set him on fire after pouring petrol. He jumped into a nearby pond to douse the fire but sustained serious injuries in the attack. He was admitted to the Dhaka Medical College, where multiple surgeries were performed on him. However, his condition kept deteriorating. After receiving treatment for two days, Das passed away on Saturday morning, around 8 am.

A complaint was filed by Khokon Das’s father, Paresh Chandra Das, at the Damudya police station late Thursday night regarding the incident. Three accused have been identified in the case, namely Sohag Khan (27), son of Babul Khan of Kansheshwar area, Rabbi Molla (21), son of Shamsuddin Molla, and Palash Sardar (25), son of Shahid Sardar. Sohag Khan and Rabbi Molla were named by the victim during his treatment. Police found the involvement of the third accused during the probe.

Das’s wife said that her husband was a simple man with no enemies. “They stabbed him, hit him on the head and set him on fire. I don’t know who did this. We just want justice,” she said, recounting the horrible incident.

Paresh Chandra Das said that the assailants also snatched six lakh taka from Khokon. He had said earlier, “The terrorists snatched six lakh taka from him, hacked him, injured him and set his body on fire. By the grace of God, he survived. I don’t know how many days he will recover and return home. I have filed a case with the police station regarding this incident. We want the police to quickly arrest the criminals and bring them to justice.” Unfortunately, Khokon Das didn’t recover, and his deadbody returned homed.

This is the fourth incident of an attack on a Hindu in Bangladesh in the last couple of weeks, since the recent unrest in the country. On December 18, 2025, 25-year-old Dipu Chandra Das was lynched by a mob in Mymensingh following false blasphemy allegations levelled by a co-worker. After beating him to death, the mob hung his body from a tree and set it on fire. This was followed by another Hindu youth, 29-year-old Amrit Mondal, being lynched on December 24, 2025, in the Hossaindanga area of Kalimohar Union. Subsequently, on December 27, 2025, the body of a Hindu teenager, Kamdeb Das, was found floating in a pond in Badalpur village of Ajmiriganj subdivision in the Habiganj district of Bangladesh.
