The contesting polls for the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) will be held on January 15 for 29 municipal corporations, 32 district councils, and 336 panchayat samitis. The State Election Commissioner (SEC), Dinesh Waghmare, in a press conference, stated that the nomination process for the contest will begin on December 23. The process will go on until December 30. The polling will be held for the BMC and 28 other municipal corporations in the state of Maharashtra.

The State Election Commissioner (SEC), Dinesh Waghmare, announced in a press conference that the polling for the 29 municipal corporations, a part of which is Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), will be held on January 15. In addition, he stated that the results will be declared after a day, i.e., January 16, 2026. Waghmare mentioned that these bodies have 2,869 seats with nearly 3.48 number of eligible voters.

What’s so special about BMC polls?

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls were previously under the control of the undivided Shiv Sena. These polls are the largest municipal corporation polls in the country and also the richest ones. The approximate budget of the polls stands to be more than the annual budget of some small states in India.

Supreme Court’s order for polls

The polling for municipal corporations has been pending in several cities of Maharashtra, like Mumbai, Pune, and Thane, since 2022. The top court of India, the Supreme Court, has now given a deadline of January 31 to complete all the elections which are pending.
