Fortnite, one of the world’s most popular battle royale games, has made a long-awaited return to the Google Play Store in the United States. The game’s return comes after a lengthy legal battle between Epic Games and Google over app store policies and in-app payment rules. Fortnite was originally removed from the Play Store in 2020 when Epic tried to include its own payment system rather than use Google’s billing infrastructure. Google said this violated its policies, and the game was pulled from the store.
The situation has now changed after a court-ordered settlement. A U.S. District Court directed Google to follow the agreed terms, which opened the door for Fortnite’s return. Epic said it is still coordinating with Google on some details, but the game is now officially available on Google Play, with a wider rollout expected later.
During the five-year absence, Android users had to rely on sideloading or the Epic Games Store app to play Fortnite. It worked, but it was not the most convenient option for everyone. With the game back on Google Play, installation and updates become as simple as any other app, which is a big relief for regular players.
This move also follows the broader change in Epic’s legal battles. Earlier this year, Fortnite returned to the Apple App Store in the U.S. after a separate ruling required Apple to allow alternative in-app payment options. Epic has been vocal about what it sees as restrictive practices by both tech giants, and these recent changes show how much the landscape is shifting.
Even though Epic has had more success with Google, the Apple case is still complicated, with some rulings being revised on appeal. But for players, the key takeaway is simple: Fortnite is finally easier to access again on both major mobile platforms.
For now, the game is only back on the Google Play Store in the U.S. Epic says more regions will follow, and updates will be shared soon.
