Former Chief of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Faiz Hameed was granted a 14-year sentence by a Pakistani military court on Thursday (11th December).
Hameed was tried for four charges, including engaging in political activities and violating the Official Secrets Act. He was granted the sentence by the Field General Court Martial (FGCM). “The accused was tried on four charges related to engaging in political activities, violation of the Official Secrets Act, detrimental to the safety and interest of the state, misuse of authority and government resources, and causing wrongful loss to individuals,” a statement by the FGCM reportedly mentioned. As per the Pakistani military, Hameed was found guilty on all the four charges after “lengthy and laborious” trial, which resulted in the sentence.
As per reports, Hameed was considered close to former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has also in jail since 2023 on multiple charges. Last year, the former ISI Director General was detained after an investigation was ordered by Pakistan’s Supreme Court into the allegations relating to the Top City project scam. The scam was related to a private housing project being developed by the Top City company near Islamabad.
Hameed served as the ISI chief between 2019 and 2021. He was appointed to the post when the current Army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, was removed from the post.
