The weather system over the Strait of Malacca, which became a deep depression on Tuesday night, has now strengthened into a cyclonic storm named Senyar, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday. In an update posted on X at 9:13 a.m., the IMD said the system had moved west at around 10 km per hour in the last six hours. As of 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Cyclone Senyar was located over the Strait of Malacca and nearby parts of northeast Indonesia. It was positioned near latitude 5.0°N and longitude 98.0°E which is about 100 km east of Kuta Makmur in Indonesia, 260 km west-southwest of George Town in Malaysia, 600 km east-southeast of Nancowry in the Nicobar Islands, and 740 km southeast of Car Nicobar.
According to the IMD, “It is very likely to maintain the intensity of cyclonic storm for next 24 hours and then weaken gradually.”
The storm is expected to travel almost directly west and cross the Indonesia coast by late morning on November 26. After that, it is likely to move west-southwest for a while and then curve back towards the east over the next two days.

Heavy rain to continue in THESE states
Because two strong weather systems are active, one of them now a cyclonic storm, many southern states are on alert. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are already getting very heavy rain. The IMD has said that the same kind of weather will continue in these areas this week.
Tamil Nadu is expected to receive heavy rain until November 30. Coastal Andhra Pradesh will get rain from November 29 to December 1. Kerala and the Mahe region are also likely to see similar weather on November 26.
The IMD has also warned of very heavy rain in Tamil Nadu from November 28 to 30, and in coastal Andhra Pradesh on November 30. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands will get very heavy rainfall on November 26 and 27. An orange alert has been issued for some districts in Tamil Nadu between November 28 and 30.
Thunderstorms and lightning are expected to continue during this period. Strong winds reaching up to 60 kmph may also hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands until November 28.
