India’s first Republic Day: The country tasted freedom on August 15, 1947, but the dream of becoming an independent and sovereign republic was fulfilled on January 26, 1950. This was the day when the Constitution of India came into effect and the country celebrated its first Republic Day.

This historic moment was filled with pride and enthusiasm for every Indian. Let us find out how the first Republic Day was celebrated and what special events took place at that time. We will also learn how and where the parade was held.

Republic Day Ceremony

The country’s first Governor General, C. Rajagopalachari, declared India a sovereign republic at 10:18 AM on January 26, 1950. Just six minutes later, Dr. Rajendra Prasad took the oath as India’s first President. This oath was administered in the Durbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Following this, the President was given a gun salute, which is still an integral part of the Republic Day celebrations.

Organization of the First Republic Day Parade

The first Republic Day parade held in Delhi took place at Irwin Stadium, now known as the National Stadium. At that time, there was no wall around the stadium, allowing a clear view of the Old Fort. The parade started at 2:30 PM instead of the morning. President Dr. Rajendra Prasad arrived at Irwin Stadium at 3:45 PM, riding in a specially decorated carriage through Connaught Place.

Highlights of the First Parade

The first Republic Day parade saw the participation of all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces: The Indian Army, the Indian Air Force, and the Indian Navy. The parade included 3,000 soldiers and 100 aircraft. Aircraft like Dakota and Spitfire performed a flypast. General Field Marshal Cariappa addressed the soldiers, saying, “Today we are free, you are free, and our dog is also free.” His words were enough to fill every Indian’s heart with enthusiasm.

Foreign Guests and the Beginning of Traditions

The chief guest of the first Republic Day was Dr. Sukarno, the President of Indonesia. On this day, the tradition of inviting a chief guest to the Republic Day celebrations began. On this occasion, the President hoisted the tricolour at Irwin Stadium and took the salute of the parade.

The magic of the 31-gun salute and flypast

For the first time, a 31-gun salute was given on Republic Day, which resonated throughout Delhi. Later, this number was reduced to 21. The flypast made the event even more grand. During the Republic Day celebrations, the sweet vendor at Chandni Chowk in Delhi distributed sweets throughout the area. The entire area from Red Temple to Fatehpuri Mosque was decorated with the tricolour and flowers. A langar was organized at Sis Ganj Gurudwara and Bangla Sahib.

Special memories of the first Republic Day

Although the 1950 parade was not as grand as today’s parade, it symbolized pride and a new beginning for Indians. There were no tableaux, but army contingents showcased the valour of that time. In the following years, the grandeur of the parade increased, and tableaux, folk dances, and fireworks also became part of the celebrations. The first Republic Day was not just an event; it was a celebration of India becoming a republic.
