Tamil Nadu minister S.M Nasar stated that the DMK government will await the Supreme Court’s final judgement in the case before taking a decision on reconstituting the State Waqf board.
In a major decision, the Tamil Nadu government has announced it will not reconstitute the State Waqf Board until the Supreme Court pronounces its final verdict in the plea challenging the Waqf amendment act. In a official statement, Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Minorities and Non-Resident Tamils Welfare, S.M Nasar stated that the state government will await the top court’s final judgement in the case before taking a decision on reconstituting the Waqf board.
Since the Waqf Amendment Act related petitions are pending before the Supreme Court, “till such time the final verdict is pronounced, the State Waqf Board will not be reconstituted as per the Waqf Amendment Act, which was hastily enforced by the Union government,” Nasar said, according to the release.
The Minister also stated that the ruling DMK will not allow “tampering” with the Waqf law, and the state government has also challenged the Waqf amendment act in the Supreme Court, noting that that apex court has passed interim order on September 15, in which it stayed select provision of the new amendment.
According to the Centre, the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) Act, 2025, the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 aims to improve governance by enhancing transparency in property management. The amendment is also designed to streamline coordination between Waqf Boards and local authorities and ensuring that stakeholders’ rights are protected, it says.
