New Delhi: Along with the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force, the Indian Navy has also begun upgrading itself to destroy enemies. The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is developing a reactor that will help more than double the capacity of the Indian Navy’s next-generation submarines. Confirming the project, a BARC scientist, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the project is highly confidential.

New reactor classified as S-5

The new reactor is being developed for S-5-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines and nuclear-powered attack submarines. This development comes against the backdrop of China strengthening its maritime nuclear deterrence capabilities. This submarine will destroy enemies underwater without even a second’s exposure.

New reactor to generate 200 megawatts of power

The BARC scientist stated that the new reactor is expected to generate 200 megawatts of power. He further stated that this is a major upgrade as the reactors on the existing two nuclear submarines, INS Arihant and INS Arighat, have a capacity of 83 megawatts. The third nuclear submarine of this class, INS Aridhaman, is undergoing testing. This reactor, being developed at BARC, will provide several major advantages to the new submarines, including improved operational capabilities and longer submergence times.

Other projects of BARC

In another development, BARC is also designing a light water-based 200-megawatt India Small Modular Reactor (SMR), a 555-megawatt SMR, and a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor to be integrated with a thermochemical plant for clean hydrogen production. This was stated by Atomic Energy Commission Chairman A.K. Mohanty at the 69th IAEA conference in Vienna this week.
