He also congratulated Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki on assuming the office.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing a public meeting in Manipur’s capital, Imphal, on Saturday, 13 September 2025, said, “For the last few days, the youth of Nepal have been engaged wholeheartedly in cleaning and painting the streets of the country. I have also seen their pictures on social media. Their positive thinking and work not only inspire but are also a clear indication of Nepal’s new rise.” PM Modi was referring to the Gen Z group that led the anti-government protests in Nepal.
Congratulated Sushila Karki
He also congratulated Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki on assuming office and described her appointment as ‘a great example of women empowerment’. PM Modi said, “I want to congratulate Karki ji on behalf of 140 crore Indians. I also wish Nepal all the best for its bright future.”
Former Chief Justice of Nepal Sushila Karki became the first woman Prime Minister to lead the interim government of the country on Friday night. PM Modi said, “Karki’s taking over the top post in that country is an example of women empowerment. I am confident that she will pave the way for peace, stability and prosperity in Nepal.”
Sushila Karki and BHU
Her becoming the interim prime minister ended the political uncertainty that had been going on for many days, as KP Sharma Oli had to resign from the post of Prime Minister due to the nationwide movement over the ban on social media. Karki was chosen to lead the interim government after a meeting between President Ramchandra Paudel, Nepal’s top military officials and young protesters leading the anti-government protests. Former Chief Justice Karki, known for her honesty and outspokenness, studied at Banaras Hindu University (BHU).
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation
President Paudel also held separate consultations with leaders of major political parties, legal experts and respected persons of civil society before taking the decision to appoint an acting Prime Minister. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was forced to resign after the Gen Z group started massive protests.
Violent protests
The main demands of the protesters included curbing corruption, ending partisanship and lifting the ban on social media sites. At least 51 people, including an Indian national, have died in the recent Gen Z protests against corruption and a ban on social media platforms in Nepal.
