The Armed Forces of the Philippines have expressed keen interest in acquiring India’s ‘Pralay’ tactical ballistic missile.
Pralay missile features: India is making waves across the globe with its missile power. During Operation Sindoor, the Indian Air Force wreaked havoc on Pakistan with its BrahMos missile, attracting the interest of many countries for purchase. Although several nations have already acquired this missile earlier, the recently tested destructive version has also sparked strong interest.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines have expressed keen interest in acquiring India’s ‘Pralay’ tactical ballistic missile. This interest comes after the Philippines had already struck a major deal with India for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.
According to the reports, the Philippines Army actually wants to further strengthen its defense capabilities, and in this process, it has considered ‘Pralay’ as a potential option. If this deal is finalized, it will be a major strategic and economic advantage for India.
Here are some of the key features:
- Pralay is an indigenously developed, tactical, surface-to-surface ballistic missile.
- The maximum speed of the Pralay missile is Mach 6.1, i.e., around 7,470 km/h
- This makes it a hypersonic missile—about five times faster than the speed of sound.
- Its high speed combined with Maneuverable Re-entry Vehicle (MaRV) technology allows it to alter its flight path mid-course.
- The Pralay missile has a strike range of 150 km to 500 km.
- It can carry a payload of up to 1,000 kilograms, which may include different types of warheads.
- This missile can strike targets with high precision, making it extremely effective in destroying enemy strongholds, command centers, airfields, and bunkers.
Why is this missile so important for the Philippines?
Currently, the Philippines is facing territorial disputes in the South China Sea, due to which it wants to strengthen its coastal defense. While the BrahMos is primarily an anti-ship missile, the ‘Pralay’ is used for surface-to-surface strikes.
