New Delhi: In a significant development on Wednesday, Union Minister Amit Shah moved three bills in Lok Sabha for the removal of the prime minister, chief ministers, and ministers arrested on serious criminal charges for 30 days. The bills drew fierce protests from the Opposition and during the protests, opposition also threw paper at the Minister. Why is Opposition protesting the bills introduced by HM Shah?
As soon as the bill was tabled, the Opposition members began protests and trooped into the well, raising slogans, as some of them tore copies of the Bills. As per a report carried by news agency PTI, Opposition MPs, including AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi and Congress’ Manish Tewari and K C Vengopal termed the proposed law against the Constitution and federalism and spoke against the introduction of the Bills by Union Minister Amit Shah.
“I condemn the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, proposed to be tabled, by the Government of India today. I condemn it as a step towards something that is more than a super- Emergency, a step to end the democratic era of India for ever. This draconian step comes as a death knell for democracy and federalism in India”, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted on X criticizing the bill.
What Amit Shah said on the opposition of the bills?
“We cannot be so shameless that we continue to occupy constitutional positions while facing serious charges,” Shah said while defending the bills, as quoted by the PTI report.
“The purpose of the bill is that a government cannot be run from jail… It is unjust to the expectations with which the public elects their representatives”” the Home Minister added, defending the bill in the Parliament.
