New Delhi: The election for the post of Vice President will be held on September 9, the Election Commission of India announced on Friday. The notification for the vice presidential election will be issued on August 7, and the last date for filing nomination papers will be August 21.
What is the last date for making nominations?
It is to be noted that the results of the election will be announced on the polling day — September 9 — itself, the Election Commission stated. The post of the vice president fell vacant after the resignation of incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 22.

How is a Vice President elected?
The Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament, in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote and the voting in such election is by secret ballot.
An election to fill a vacancy caused by the expiry of the term of office of Vice-President is completed before the expiry of the term. In case a vacancy arises by reasons of death, resignation or removal or otherwise, the election to fill that vacancy is held as soon as possible after the occurrence. The person so elected is entitled to hold office for a full term of five years from the date he enters office.
Why did Jagdeep Dhankhar resign?
Dhankhar had resigned on health grounds on Monday, the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament.
