6.1 magnitude earthquake jolts Nepal; tremors felt in Siliguri, Patna

Kathmandu: An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale hit Nepal on Friday morning. Strong tremors were felt across the Himalayan region, India’s Patna, and nearby areas of Bihar. The tremors were also felt in Siliguri.

According to news agency Reuters, the powerful quake struck around Bhairab Kunda of the Sindhupalchok district in Nepal at around 2.35 am.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences recorded the earthquake as having a magnitude of 5.6, whereas India’s National Centre for Seismology assessed it at 5.5. It remains uncertain if there were several tremors.

6.1 Magnitude Earthquake

An earthquake of 6.1 magnitude is classified as strong and has the strength to major damage, particularly in areas close to the epicenter, which may include structural shaking and the cracks. The full impact of the seismic event is still being evaluated, and there have been no reports of damage or injuries at this time.

“It shook us from our sleep strongly. We rushed out of the house. People have now returned back to homes. We have not received any report of damage or injuries so far,” Ganesh Nepali, a senior Nepali official told Reuters.

Residents of the neighbouring state started sharing photos and videos on social media platforms showing ceiling fans and other items shaking due to the powerful quake in Patna. An X user mentioned that the tremors lasted for a “good 35 seconds”.

Last month, the Himalayan region of Tibet witnessed a series of six powerful earthquakes, the most powerful registering a magnitude of 7.1, resulting in the loss of more than 125 lives.
