Kottayam: Five third-year students were arrested from the Government Nursing College on Wednesday, February 12 after three first-year students filed a complaint with the Kottayam Gandhinagar police, alleging months of severe ragging.

As per the complaint, the students reported three months of physical abuse at the institute, which reportedly began in November 2024. The assault included forced nudity and various other acts of severe violence which inflicted multiple injuries on the students.

According to a report by NDTV, the students alleged that they were forced to stand naked while their seniors hung dumbbells from their private parts. The victims also reported that sharp objects, including a compass from a geometry box, were used on them to inflict injuries.

The students further claimed that ‘a lotion’ was forcibly smeared into their wounds and mouths while they screamed in pain. They also alleged that the seniors filmed the entire act of violence, blackmailing them with dire consequences, if they reported the abuse.

Allegedly, the senior students also extorted money from the juniors on Sundays to purchase alcohol.

Following the complaint students were suspended from the institute and arrested under the Anti-Ragging Act.
