Three U.S. House members introduced a new resolution on Friday, December 12, to rescind President Donald Trump’s national emergency order. The said order slapped tariffs as high as 50% on stuff coming in from India. They say these moves are straight-up illegal and they’re hurting American workers, shoppers, and the friendship between the US and India.

The push comes from representatives Deborah Ross, Marc Veasey, and Raja Krishnamoorthi. It follows a bipartisan Senate move to kill off similar tariffs on Brazil and put a stop to the President using emergency powers to jack up import duties.
The resolution wants to wipe out the extra 25% secondary duties that hit India on 27 August 2025. Those got added on top of earlier reciprocal tariffs, pushing duties on lots of Indian products to 50% under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
“North Carolina’s economy is super tied to India with trade, investments, and a big Indian American community,” Rep. Ross said. She pointed out Indian companies have poured over a billion dollars into the state, creating thousands of jobs in life sciences and tech. Plus, North Carolina makers ship hundreds of millions of goods to India every year.
“India’s a key cultural, economic, and strategic partner, and these illegal tariffs are like a tax on regular North Texans dealing with higher prices already,” Rep. Veasey chimed in.
Indian-American Rep. Krishnamoorthi called the tariffs “counterproductive” because they mess up supply chains, hurt US workers, and make things cost more for everyday people. He said ditching them would boost US-India ties on both economic and security fronts.
“Instead of helping American interests or security, these duties disrupt supply chains, harm American workers, and drive up costs for consumers. Ending these damaging tariffs will allow the United States to engage with India to advance our shared economic and security needs,” he added.
This is all part of a bigger effort by congressional Democrats to fight Trump’s one-man trade decisions and fix things with India. Back in October, Ross, Veasey, Krishnamoorthi, Rep. Ro Khanna, and 19 other lawmakers urged the President to reverse the tariffs and mend the strained relationship.
“Ending Trump’s India tariffs is part of a broader effort by congressional Democrats to reclaim Congress’s constitutional authority over trade and to stop the President from using emergency powers to unilaterally impose his misguided trade policies,” the release said.
It all started in August when Trump hit Indian goods with a 25% tariff on 1st August. Then he added another 25% a few days later, blaming India’s buys of Russian oil, which he says helps fund Moscow’s war in Ukraine, bringing the total to 50%.
